BOSTON (WHDH) — An Anheuser-Busch truck dangled over the edge an Interstate-93 overpass following a crash Friday afternoon, which snarled traffic around the city for the evening commute.
State police, who continue to investigate the crash, said a preliminary investigation showed the truck hit the guardrail and rode it on the high-speed side of the road. The truck ended up going partially over the rail, causing the cab and first few feet of the trailer to hang in the air over the Leverett Connector.
The driver and his passenger got out of the truck safely and are doing fine. They stayed on-scene as crews removed the truck.
An Anheuser-Busch spokesperson released a statement that said, “We can confirm there was an accident involving one of our trucks this afternoon. We are still learning specifics on the incident, and will assist fully with authorities in their investigations. Our thoughts go out to all the individuals involved.”
A second truck was also involved in the accident. The driver was transported by Boston EMS to a local hospital to be checked out.
Crews pulled the truck back onto the roadway by 4:40 p.m. Friday. By 5:20 p.m. the truck was towed away from the scene.
All lanes on I-93 northbound were closed for a short time Friday as crews worked to clean up a diesel fuel spill from the crash. Two lanes on I-93 were reopened a short time later, but exit 28 and the high-speed lane remained closed as crews towed the truck away. The Leverett Connector northbound from Storrow Drive and Leverett Circle was also closed for much of the evening.
For people driving on I-93 from Braintree to Boston, nine miles took 2.5 hours Friday afternoon.
The accident also caused severe delays on the MBTA’s Orange Line and on the MBCR commuter rail out of North Station. Service was stopped for a short time while crews removed the truck.
